Spanish postal service launches Portuguese Camino conversation Guide

The Spanish postal service Correos launched yesterday, February 5, the “Guía de conversación del Camino Portugués” (Portuguese Camino conversation guide), an illustrated publication aimed at pilgrims walking the Portuguese Camino, designed to facilitate communication and highlight the linguistic diversity of the territories crossed on the way to Santiago.

The initiative is promoted by Correos as part of the #CaminoSostenible (Sustainable Camino) project, a corporate social responsibility programme developed around the Camino de Santiago, focused on the human, cultural and natural heritage associated with pilgrimage.

The guide brings together vocabulary and commonly used expressions along the Portuguese Camino, presented in the three languages found along the route: Portuguese, Spanish, and Galician. It includes terms directly related to pilgrimage, such as the seta amarela (yellow arrow) or mojón (waymarker), as well as words used in pilgrims’ daily routines, connected to accommodation, dining, transport, or the use of postal services.

The contents are accompanied by illustrations by Sr. Reny and phonetic transcriptions, allowing for quick visual recognition and easier pronunciation learning. This approach reflects the international profile of the route, where around 70 percent of pilgrims come from abroad, mainly from the United States, Germany, and Italy.

The publication is available in two language versions, one in Spanish, English, and Portuguese, and another in German, English, and Portuguese. Distribution is free and will take place through main Correos offices along the route, as well as in albergues and accommodation facilities located on both the Central Route and the Coastal Route. A digital version is also available in PDF format.
