Via Lusitana launches support program for the Camino de Santiago

The Via Lusitana Pilgrim Association will launch the subsidy program “DAR VALOR AO CAMINHO” (“Adding Value to the Camino”), created to financially support projects that improve the infrastructures and services used by pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. This is an unprecedented and significant initiative for the Association, which will channel resources directly into interventions with concrete impact on the quality of conditions, safety and comfort of pilgrims, in all stages of the route.

The program covers albergues, non-profit organizations and local accommodations exclusively for pilgrims, as well as other potentially relevant entities. The infrastructures must be located on the Camino de Santiago in Portugal (or in Spain, provided the route begins in Portugal). Individual applications and those from entities relying exclusively on public funding will not be accepted.

Eligible projects include repairs or improvements in albergues (comfort, accessibility, safety, energy efficiency, etc.), interventions along the routes (rest areas, drinking water points, information panels, etc.), and other initiatives that enhance the support provided to pilgrims. Applications open in November 2025 and results will be announced by April 2026.

The selection of applications will be carried out by a jury composed of members of the Association’s Board and volunteer members chosen for this purpose. Those interested in joining this evaluation team, contributing with their experience and critical perspective to the selection of projects, may express their availability by sending an email to apoios@vialusitana.org with the subject “Volunteer Adding Value to the Camino.”
