Valença will renovate São Teotónio Albergue

A €525,000 contract for the renovation of São Teotónio Albergue in Valença has been open for bids since September 24. The City Council set the time limit for completing the work at 270 days, approximately nine months. The notice published in “Diário da República” (Official Gazette) states that bids must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on October 8.

The municipality’s plans already included increasing capacity to a maximum of 69 pilgrims by expanding the albergue. They also called for improvements to common areas and work throughout the building, including its structure. The City Council announced these plans on its website on October 5, 2025.

According to the 2025 statement, Turismo de Portugal (Tourism of Portugal) would fund the work, which the City Council estimated would cost around €475,000. That amount would also cover improvements to safety, comfort and mobility on the section of the Camino de Santiago within the municipality of Valença, although most of it would go toward work on the albergue.

The accommodation has been open since 2005 and welcomes pilgrims on the Fátima Routes and the various Caminos de Santiago, which converge in Valença en route to Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia. The City Council considers this albergue an essential stop for those following these routes.
