Valença upgrades Albergue and section of the Camino
Valença is preparing an integrated intervention on the Portuguese Camino de Santiago that combines the renovation of the São Teotónio Albergue with improvements to the section that crosses the municipality. The operation strengthens the municipality’s role as the entry point for the Jacobean itineraries and aims to improve the reception and the experience of pilgrims passing through Valença.
The initiative is part of the “Este é o Caminho 2.0” (This is the Way 2.0) project, to enhance the Portuguese Central Route – Porto and North, which also includes interventions in Paredes de Coura, Ponte de Lima and Barcelos. For this project, Valença will receive an investment of around 475,000 euros, financed by Tourism of Portugal through the ‘+Interior Turismo’ funding line.
Opened in 2005, the São Teotónio Albergue is a reference facility for pilgrims walking the Portuguese Camino de Santiago. The intervention will cover the entire building, modernising infrastructure, renovating common areas and increasing capacity to 69 beds, responding to the continuous growth in demand.
On the section of the Camino within the municipality, the local authority plans to reorganise crossing areas, reinforce signage and improve the connection between the historic centre and the exit to Tui. The works aim to make orientation clearer, increase safety and improve the experience of pilgrims as they pass through Valença.
