Tomar celebrates St. James’ Day with music and tradition
From July 25 to 27, the municipality of Tomar will host a programme of events highlighting the city’s connection to the Portuguese Camino. Music, religious celebrations and local activities are all part of the initiative.
On Friday, July 25, the Convento de Cristo will host the “Sete Lágrimas” ensemble at 9:30 pm, performing the concert “Cancioneiro de Elvas”. Admission is free but requires prior booking, which can be made by phone +351 249 322 730 or e-mail se.ccristo@museusemonumentos.pt. That same day, shops and businesses along the Camino route in Tomar will join the initiative Tomar o Caminho – Está no Caminho Certo (Taking /”Tomar” the Way – It’s the Right Way), promoting activities for those passing through the city.
On Sunday, July 27, the programme concludes with the Pilgrim’s Mass at 10:30 am at the Church of São João Baptista, followed by a community lunch next to the Peniche bridge at 12:30 pm. Registrations for the lunch can be made by phone +351 925 082 993 or e-mail luciliabrribeiro@gmail.com.
Throughout the three days of festivities, the Tourist Office will feature the exhibition “The Portuguese Camino passes through Tomar”, dedicated to the historical significance of this route in the region. With these initiatives, Tomar aims to energise the city and engage residents and visitors in a celebration that brings together heritage, spirituality and tradition.
