Santiago Week in Tavira

From July 18 to 25, Tavira will celebrate Santiago Week, organized by the municipality’s Catholic parishes and the Union of the Civil Parishes of Tavira. The program includes religious celebrations, music, a walk, an exhibition, and other activities open to the public. The initiative highlights the religious, historical, and community dimensions associated with the Saint.

The activities begin on July 18 at the Church of Santiago. A Eucharistic celebration will take place at 6:00 p.m., followed at 9:30 p.m. by a performance by the Sebastião Leiria Choir of the Tavira Music Academy. The following day, at 11:30 a.m., the religious program continues with a Eucharistic celebration featuring the Hymns of Santiago.

On July 22, the “Caminhada (Walk) de Santiago” will leave the Church of Santo António at 9:00 p.m. The route includes the Salinas, Caminho dos Pombais, Estrada de Santa Luzia, Caminho da Caruna, and D. Manuel I School, before ending at the Church of Santiago. On July 24, Carmo Church will host the “Eucaristia com os Avós” (Eucharist with Grandparents) at 10:30 a.m., followed by a cultural and musical gathering presented by the “Fado com História” (Fado with History) project.

The July 25 program is entirely dedicated to Santiago. At 4:30 p.m., the Tavira Choir will welcome the Nascente Choir from Óbidos at the Church of Santiago. At 6:00 p.m., a Eucharistic celebration will be followed by the Procession in Honor of Santiago. The program ends at 10:00 p.m. in Republic Square with a free concert by The Peakles – The Beatles Tribute.

Throughout the week, “Casa André Pilarte” will host the exhibition “Santiago: Memória de uma Freguesia” (“Santiago: The Memory of a Civil Parish”), presenting the history, heritage, traditions, and people of the former Civil Parish of Santiago through documents, photographs, and personal accounts. The exhibition also pays tribute to those who helped shape the local identity and strengthens the community’s connection to its territory.
