Póvoa de Varzim hosts a conference on Christmas and the Camino
The Grupo de Amigos do Caminho de Santiago da Póvoa de Varzim (Friends of the Camino de Santiago Group from Póvoa de Varzim) will hold its traditional pre-Christmas conference on December 12, at 9:30 p.m., at the Axis Vermar Hotel, continuing the association’s annual event dedicated to the history and symbolism of the Jacobean pilgrimage.
This year’s theme, “O Caminho de Santiago e o Natal” (“The Camino and Christmas”), focuses on the relationship between the spirituality of the Camino and Christmas traditions. The session will be led by historian and archaeologist Joel Cleto, known for his research and dissemination of medieval history. His presentation will reflect on symbolic elements that connect the pilgrimage to the Christmas season, examining episodes, representations, and practices that bring both traditions together.
The conference also includes a musical component by the group Allcateia, which uses medieval instruments to recreate sounds associated with historical settings, helping to frame the theme in a way that brings the audience closer to the environments evoked by the Camino’s imagery and the festive season.
Participation is free but limited to the room’s capacity. Advance registration is required through the form provided by the organizers.
