GNR strengthens security on the Camino until the end of October
The Guarda Nacional Republicana (National Republican Guard) began last Monday, April 20, the “Bom Caminho 2026” (Good Camino 2026) operation, which aims to ensure the safety of people traveling to Santiago de Compostela. The operation runs until October 31, covers the Central Route, the Coastal Route, and the Interior Route, and takes place in the districts of Porto, Braga, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, and Viseu.
The GNR aims to prevent crime, boost the sense of safety, and protect nature, heritage, and signposted routes. To that end, awareness activities and increased patrols are planned in isolated and remote areas, albergues, support facilities, and areas with higher pilgrim traffic. During peak periods, joint patrols with the Guardia Civil (Spanish Civil Guard) are also planned.
For those about to begin the Camino, the GNR recommends planning the route in advance, keeping a charged phone, and informing family and friends about the itinerary. It also advises wearing light-colored clothing with retroreflective material and walking during the day, preferably with others, while remaining alert to approaches from strangers. Those traveling by bicycle are advised to use protective gear and proper lighting. In case of emergency, always call 112.
