Barcelinhos: students create tile mural on the Camino

At 11:30 a.m. on Friday, July 26, a tile mural made up of 1,179 pieces will be unveiled in Barcelinhos, alongside one of the sections of the Camino de Santiago that crosses the parish. The piece, measuring 3.15 metres high and 8.55 metres long, was created by around 200 students from Rosa Ramalho School, as part of the cultural project Do Húmus da Terra à Espiritualidade (From the Earth’s Humus to Spirituality), promoted by the Barcelinhos Parish Council with support from Barcelos City Council.

The work was coordinated by teachers Alice Fonseca and Nuno Mendanha over several weeks, involving students from different year groups. According to the teachers, the mural “did not appear all at once, just as a tree or faith does not emerge suddenly,” having been built gradually, with simple materials and continuous dedication.

The panel features visual elements such as the Rooster of Barcelos, potters’ hands, anonymous faces and symbols associated with pilgrimage. The aim was to combine ceramic tradition, spirituality and local identity, while highlighting the role of public education and collaborative creation. “Some things can’t be said in words,” the teachers wrote. “They’re said with brushes, with clay, with gestures.”

The Barcelinhos Parish Council describes the mural as “a collective testimony made of clay, paint and dedication,” designed to welcome pilgrims and engage with those who pass by. “It is also an open book,” the teachers add, “telling the other story of Barcelinhos: the story of the clay, the potter’s wheel, the kiln, and the hands that turn shapeless matter into meaning.”
