American pilgrim dies suddenly on the Camino de Santiago

Jill Marie McLaughlin, 65 years old and originally from Portland, died suddenly this past Sunday, September 6, in Esposende during her pilgrimage to Santiago. Via Veteris – Associação Jacobeia de Esposende (Esposende Jacobean Association) points to a sudden fatal attack as a possible cause.

Her husband, brother and other companions left a memorial at the site with a photograph and a letter. The message recalls Jill’s Christian faith and the belief that she will continue her pilgrimage after death, along “paths of gold, light and peace”, and that part of her story will remain linked to Santiago.

The family confirmed Jill’s death, without providing further details about what happened, and expressed their heartfelt thanks, through the funeral home, to everyone who sent them words of affection and offered comfort and support as they grieved.
