Alvaiázere and Ansião invest in the enhancement of the Camino de Santiago

The municipalities of Alvaiázere and Ansião are implementing several initiatives to qualify the territory for outdoor sports activities and enhance the natural heritage, with the aim of boosting tourism. Within the framework of the intermunicipal project “Sicó Outdoor Center”, the main interventions focus on improving the Camino de Santiago, one of the region’s key tourist assets.

Along the Camino route, the existing signage is being reviewed and reinforced with the installation of new informational panels aimed at the thousands of pilgrims who pass through both municipalities annually. Additionally, public fountains located near the Camino are being renovated to include potable water supply points, improving conditions for users.

In the area of Seiceira, where the Camino reaches the town of Alvaiázere, a rest area will be created, along with pedestrian and cycling access to Rua Visconde de Sousel. These interventions, which total an investment of around €38,000, aim to enhance the route and provide better conditions for pilgrims.

The “Sicó Outdoor Center” project, which involves an overall investment of approximately €850,000, also includes other initiatives. Among the completed actions are the marking and signaling of new trail running and MTB routes in Alvaiázere and Ansião, representing an investment of over €68,000. These trails are now awaiting approval from the competent authorities and will complement the region’s outdoor activities offer.

The project also includes immaterial actions, such as the creation of an online portal, training of local tourism agents, and the certification of the region as a sustainable tourism destination.

“This project revitalizes the local community, creating new opportunities for employment and business, while promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. It contributes to sustainable tourism and environmental conservation, making the region more attractive, dynamic, and sustainable,” says João Paulo Guerreiro, Mayor of Alvaiázere.
