‘Hospitalários no Caminho de Santiago’ return to Leça do Balio
The historical reenactment ‘Os Hospitalários no Caminho de Santiago’ (The Hospitallers on the Camino de Santiago) will take place from September 8 to 13 in Leça do Balio, in the area surrounding Leça do Balio Monastery, at the intersection of Camino de Santiago routes. The event aims to faithfully recreate the medieval period and features a lively and varied program, with experiences for visitors of all ages.
The Municipality of Matosinhos has been, since 2006, the organizer of this fair, aiming to highlight local heritage, history, and traditions. In this context, the event program covers topics such as the Ordem dos Cavaleiros de S. João de Jerusalém do Hospital (Order of the Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem), the support provided to pilgrims, the memories and customs of Leça do Balio, and the local connection to the Camino de Santiago.
The fair will include themed workshops, interactive activities, guided tours, cultural performances, medieval tournaments, falconry demonstrations, an encampment, and stables. The medieval market will also feature a traditional crafts section and food and beverage areas dedicated to medieval and local cuisine.
Several shows are also planned, with dates yet to be announced, including “O Veneno e a Fé” (Poison and Faith), centered on a conspiracy at the monastery; “A Mensagem Oculta” (The Hidden Message), in which a young monk attempts to decipher multiple riddles; and “Casamento Real” (Royal Wedding), which reenacts the wedding of D. Fernando and D. Leonor Teles. The full program will be published, as soon as it becomes available, on the event page.
Applications are open to artisans, merchants, producers, and food service operators, whose participation will reinforce the authentic and diverse character of the reenactment. Those interested can review the rules for taking part here and apply no later than August 7 by completing this form.
