Volunteers marked April 25th between Afife and Caminha

Around thirty volunteers from the Associação dos Amigos do Caminho de Santiago de Viana do Castelo (AACSVC – Friends of the Camino de Santiago Association of Viana do Castelo), coming from various parts of the country, celebrated Freedom Day by repainting the yellow arrows of the Coastal Route between Afife and Caminha, in an initiative that included the unveiling of a mural, the singing of “Grândola,” and a communal lunch.

The work was coordinated by the association that manages the regional albergue, which distributed participants along the route to ensure full coverage. In Vila Praia de Âncora, the activity was briefly interrupted for the inauguration of a mural, beside which the group sang “Grândola”, in a shared moment of celebration.

The mural, created by Laura Vilares, Liratov, and Fátima Assis of the cooperative Nuceartes, bears the inscription “In the Vale do Âncora, Freedom Will Always Endure.” The piece stands as a source of pride for the region and was inspired by footage from an RTP archive depicting a local demonstration in 1974.

After the ceremony, the volunteers resumed painting the yellow arrows along the route to the albergue in Caminha, where a convivial lunch hosted by the AACSVC took place. The gathering brought together all participants in a moment of sharing and fellowship, marking the conclusion of this commemorative stage.
