Valença restores the ‘Centenários’ stone wayside cross in Fontoura
The Centenários stone wayside cross, in Valença, underwent conservation work promoted by the Municipal Council in collaboration with the Parish Council of Fontoura. The intervention included surface cleaning, repair of cracks, replacement of unsuitable mortars and recovery of broken elements. The work was carried out by a conservation and restoration specialist, ensuring that the monument maintained its original characteristics.
The cross is located in the garden of Rua da Igreja, in Fontoura, and is part of a heritage complex that includes the Chapel of Senhor dos Aflitos and the cross of Senhor dos Aflitos, where Jacobean signs remain. The structure rests on a granite base and features a cross made of breccia, a rock formed by cemented fragments, possibly from Tavira, combined with marble.
Built in the 20th century, this is one of the “centenary crosses,” erected to mark the 800 years of the Foundation of Portugal (1140–1940). It was conceived as a tribute from the population of S. Miguel de Fontoura and today remains a point of reference for those walking the Camino de Santiago, being frequently recorded in photographs by pilgrims.
